This tutorial will show how a series of different geometric canes can be made from an ingot of stacked clay sheets.
Step 1 Begin by preparing a Skinner blend of two contrasting colors. This blend should be the full width of the pasta machine. I used purple as the dark color and white with a pinch of the purple added as the light color.
Step 2 Fold the left side over as shown and neatly press the folded sheet together lining up the edges.
Step 3 Pass this piece, folded end first, through the pasta machine set to its widest setting (#1 on an Atlas). Continue folding and passing the sheet fold first through the pasta machine until a smooth gradation of color is obtained across the sheet.
Step 4 Trim the sheet so that it can be fed into the pasta machine with one of the solid colored edges first.
Step 5 Pass the sheet through the pasta machine set to thickness #2, solid colored edge first.
Step 6 Thin the sheet down to the #4 thickness setting.
Step 7 Fold the sheet in half as shown and neatly press the folded sheet together, lining up the edges.
Step 8 Feed the resultant sheet through the pasta machine, as shown, on the #4 thickness setting.
Step 9 Trim off the ragged ends.
Step 10 The result is a long, narrow skinner blended sheet.
